Outdoor hockey is back at Soldier Field for the first time since the 2013 Hockey City Classic. The event, dubbed the Coyote Logistics Hockey City Classic, will see Michigan face Michigan State and Western Michigan take on Miami-Ohio. All four of those teams played in the former Central Collegiate Hockey Association, but are now split off into the Big Ten and NCHC conferences, as per realignment.
The event will take place on February 7, 2015 which will be followed up by ten days of public and corporate ice time. In the 2013 event at Soldier Field which featured Minnesota, Wisconsin, Miami-Ohio, and the University of Notre Dame, the games took place on the same ice but only after the corporate and public skating sessions were completed. That's not the case in 2015, as previously mentioned.
“Obviously, we felt we had a very successful run in 2013,” said Drew Russell, Intersport’s vice president of sports properties. “We felt that year off from (Chicago) was important so the event continues to be a novel concept.”
Coyote Logistics also enters as the event’s corporate sponsor, who is also based in Chicago. With nearly $2 billion in annual revenue and 2,000 employees in sixteen offices nationwide, the third party logistics provider felt it necessary to sign on as corporate sponsor.
“This fits well into our broader marketing mix as we continue to grow the brand,” Coyote Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Sisler said of the company’s largest single marketing expense. “It’s going to take our brand awareness to a new level.” Believe it or not, Coyote was a low-level sponsor at the 2013 Hockey City Classic.
Tickets for next year’s event are said to be released in October at $19 each.
