Outdoor adventure: Naples Zoo and historic botanical gardens (Photos)

If you love to get up close and personal with wild animals – the Zoo in Naples is a wonderful way to spend the day. The gardens are lush with trails winding their way through the natural habitat. The zoo is nationally accredited, and the property is a historic botanical garden. The gardens were founded in 1919, making it a beautiful outdoor walk as well as a day at the zoo.

There are large glass walls between you and dangerous predators so you can get within inches of lions, and tigers, and bears (oh my) with a safe barrier in between. Other species available for observation at the zoo include cheetahs, and striped hyenas. Stripped hyenas are a rarity in the U.S. with only 15 living in the States.

Hear the roar of the king of the jungle. Hand feed a giraffe, or take a boating expedition to view various species of monkeys. The Primate Expedition Cruise takes you on a guided tour past islands of monkeys, lemurs, and apes living in their natural habitat. There are no walls or cages, just islands of primates to observe and learn about.

Enjoy feature shows such as the Safari Open Canyon open-air theatre where you see animals perform feats that come naturally to them. Various species of rare predators, free flying birds, and reptiles. Learn more about each species as you watch wildlife video and then hear the trainers and zoo keepers speak and interact live with the animals.

Meet the keeper allows you to view animals at being fed and learn directly from the keepers who interact with them daily. At Alligator Bay you will learn the truth about these creatures and see the large reptiles fed by hand by experienced handlers. Jungle Larry and Safari Jane handle venomous snakes and reptiles while they teach you all about them.

Due to the natural setting, the Naples Zoo is home to plenty of wild animals as well as zoo animals. You may come across a baby duck, or have an opportunity to hand feed a white ibis who is looking for more of fish food from the dispenser. There is always a variety of butterflies attracted to the flowers growing throughout the gardens.

Greater kudus and gazelles are part of the African Oasis. The gentle kudus has been at the zoo for a long time and is an amazing site standing beside the keeper as it would be difficult to sneak up on one of these fast creatures in the wild. Their large, well developed horns are a site to see.

There are many beautiful animals to meet at the zoo. The garden atmosphere and paved walking trails make it a wonderful way to experience nature and wildlife and to enjoy a great outdoor adventure in southwest Florida.
