Out & proud: ‘GMA’ anchor Robin Roberts goes public with sexuality

It has already been a year of great strength for “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts who has battled heath issues with tremendous strength and faith. She has also stood strong and proud in another facet of her life. According to CNN on Dec. 29, Roberts revealed that she is gay through a Facebook post.

It is not the first time a public figure such as Robin Roberts has turned to a media outlet to reveal their sexuality, but the 53-year-old Roberts was doing something more than coming out publicly as gay, she was expressing her gratitude for life and those who have been by her side in support and strength, including her long time girlfriend. In the post, which came on the first anniversary of the 100th day of her recovery from a bone marrow transplant, she writes:

“At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude. I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life. I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”

Although the news may be new to the public, both friends and co-workers already knew about Roberts’ sexuality, but this has been the first time she has been open about it. After a battle with breast cancer in 2008 and another battle with a rare blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome in 2012, the “GMA” anchor was just focused on life in general, in which she is very grateful. Fittingly, in her post she continues:

“I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes from my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold. On this last Sunday of 2013 I encourage you to reflect on what you are grateful for too.”

Robin Roberts is not alone in revealing her sexuality in the “GMA” family. In 2012, co-worker and weather anchor Sam Champion came out as gay when he announced his engagement to longtime boyfriend and now husband Rubem Robierb.
