It's a revolution, a silent revolution and you can join! The grassroots organization, a day in hand, is starting monthly Sshh Saturdays internationally on September 26, 2009. Sshh is Same Sex Hand Holding and it aims to inspire and support same sex couple couples who want to hold their partner's hand in public. This is a silent revolution because nothing needs to be said: no war of words, no impassioned speeches, and no rallies. Simply hold hands. You don't have to go to a formal event, join the revolution by holding hands with someone of the same sex wherever you are in the world!
A day in hand founder David Watkins says, "Equal rights are a necessity but we need equal respect too. When push comes to shove…love. Hand holding is a simple, liberating gesture that is essential to our communities’ health. I want the campaign to give all people good reason to hold hands everyday, and tools to fight those voices inside our heads that say we can’t do this. We can!”
In the Twin Cities a hand holding event is planned on Saturday (9/26). Grab your partner, grab a friend, and hold hands with someone of the same sex while you shop, eat, or enjoy a movie at the Mall of America. Not feeling the mall? Head to Nickelodeon Universe and ride the rides while holding hands. Promote love and equality with this simple act.
Philip Lowe of Richfield, Minnesota is using September's Sshh Saturday to begin setting up a local Twin Cities chapter of a day in hand and will have monthly events at various locations in the cities. Philip lives with his partner, Jason King, and is a member of organizations such as: the Human Rights Campaign and Outfront Minnesota."
The fight for equality isn't being fought just by the GLBTQ community anymore. More and more straight people are joining the cause of equality with us. From the celebrity perspective, it is reported that Brad Pitt refuses to marry Angelina Jolie until gay marriage is legal in the United States. If you are straight and support the equality of your gay peers, friends, and co-workers you don’t have to refuse to marry just head to the MOA and hold hands with someone of the same-sex for the day, for an hour, or for a walk around one floor of the mall. Want to share your story about being straight and holding hands with someone of your own gender? Email it to yourstories@adayinhand.com and share your experience. Photos are encouraged.
After a day at the mall of holding hands check out Rumours and Innuendo in St. Paul to socialize with other handholders at 7pm. The club will feature half price rail and tap drinks until 9pm.
You don’t have to fight to change the world just join hands!
