Ousted ‘View’ co-host Sherri Shepherd has landed a ‘wicked’ new job

It’s out with the old and in with the new! Soon-to-be ex- “View” co-host Sherri Shepherd has found a new gig, and it couldn’t be farther from her hosting role on the daily ABC chat fest. The 47-year-old star, who ends her seven year run on “The View” this Friday, has landed the role of the wicked stepmother Madame in the Broadway adaption of “Cinderella.”

Shepherd announced the news on Tuesday’s live episode of “The View,” after pulling out a pair of glass slippers. According to an Aug. 5 report by CBS News, Shepherd will begin appearing in the production of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" starting Sept. 9 at the Broadway Theatre. It was previously announced that Keke Palmer will star in the title role in the buzzy new adaption of the classic story.

While Shepherd is best known for “The View,” she has a TV and film resume that includes “30 Rock,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” "Precious," and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” But, like Palmer, this will be her first foray on the Great White Way.

According to Us Weekly, Shepherd will replace the show’s current star, Nancy Opel, as Madame, and her groundbreaking casting marks the first time an African-American has taken the role on Broadway. But interestingly, Shepherd won’t be the first “View” co-host to land a part in an adaption of the “Cinderella” story. In 1997, Whoopi Goldberg appeared in a TV movie version of the musical.

In addition to her Broadway run, Shepherd has also joined the cast of Universal's “Ride Along 2” starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. But her happy acting news comes at the same time as some not-so-happy personal news. The actress has been battling her estranged husband Lamar Sally over custody of a baby boy born via surrogate. The baby was reportedly born Tuesday in Pennsylvania, and People revealed that the separated couple has not yet reached a custody agreement. Shepherd recently won custody of her 9-year-old son, Jeffery, after a court battle against her first husband, Jeff Tarpley.
