“ Staying young is about embodying a certain mentality. A mentality that allows you to be free. Why are kids more creative than adults? Why do they laugh more? Because the stifling teeth of society have yet to pierce and shackle them.” Gabe Saporta
It’s obvious our cinema heroes are getting older. We are going to take a quick peek at four of the top action movies now playing at theatres. All four of these movies star Academy Award winning actors. Not only are they top billers in Hollywood, they are also some of America’s favorites and have been for three or four decades.
Let’s start with ‘Last Stand.’ Released January 18th of 2012, this action film stars a former Mr. Olympia and Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold stars as Ray Owens, the Sheriff of Somerton Junction, a quiet, sleepy little border town. The peacefulness is interrupted and the action begins when Gabriel Cortez (played by Eduardo Noriega; Enrique in 2008’s Vantage Point), the notorious leader of a vicious drug cartel escapes from an FBI caravan. The only thing standing in Gabriel’s way is, of course, a muscle bound Sheriff with a violent past. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc0x-jiewTE
Next we have ‘Bullet to the Head.’ Released February 1st 2013, here we have an action packed film starring yet another muscle bound favorite, Sylvester Stallone. Stallone stars as New Orleans hitman, James Bonomo. Wow, could the name sound anymore Mafioso? Anyway, long story short, Bonomo teams up with Washington DC detective Taylor Kwon to seek revenge on the enemy that killed their partners. The film also stars Christian Slater and Jason Momoa. Momoa is known for his role in Baywatch Hawaii and as Conan in the 2011 remake of Conan the Barbarian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hta6LBRDKM
A term that is used in the music world, super group, is what we could consider the three stars of this next film. ‘Stand Up Guys’, stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin; all three are Academy Award nominees and winners. The story begins as Doc (Walken) picks up his best friend Val (Pacino) from prison. Val has just completed a twenty-eight year sentence for refusing to give up his criminal associates. The two friends, and partners in crime, soon team up with their old pal Hirsch (Arkin). The three friends are as close as they have ever been. The movie is full of action, yet has its comedic moments as the three attempt to compensate for all of the years they have lost doing what they missed the most; which is crime, sex, and drugs. Of course, after the fun and games they eventually must confront their past. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NApJNjPTqZs
The Die Hard movies seem to, well, never die. ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ was released February 1st 2013. This film deserves a mention because it also stars an American cinema hero, Bruce Willis. The scenarios are more far-fetched with each Die Hard movie; yet people still flock to the theatres opening day. In ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ John McClane (Willis) teams with son Jack (Jai Courtney: Charlie in Jack Reacher) to prevent a nuclear weapons heist. What’s next? Get Eaten or Die Hard ; in which we are under a zombie attack and John just happens to be in the area to save the day. Maybe aliens attack whatever neck of the woods John is in, making it, Get Eaten or Die Hard II. Regardless, we love our Bruce Willis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riIaTrjyGZ4
These actors may be getting older, some close to entering their golden years, but they still have what it takes to keep the public eye on them and to keep people talking. They have all starred in a wide variety of roles ranging from violence to humor. The sense of humor they have off screen is a trait shared by all six of these super stars. They have an inner child that shines through in their work and their everyday lives.
