According to the Hockey Canada website, Caroline Ouellette of Montreal, Quebec has been named captain for Team Canada in women's hockey at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Ouellette, who regularly plays for the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, will take over the Olympic captaincy from Hayley Wickenheiser of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.

It is an interesting move by Hockey Canada because Ouellette is nine months younger than Wickenheiser and is also younger than team veteran Jayna Hefford of Kingston, Ontario.Wickenheiser was still put in a leadership role however as the alternate captain, while Hefford and Catherine Ward will alternate as assistant captains.

It would not be surprising if one of the reasons why Ouellette was chosen is because she is fully bilingual, and will be able to communicate well with the other five players on the team who are natives of Quebec.

Ouellette also scored the biggest goal in Canadian women's hockey since the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. It came on April 14, 2012 in overtime as Ouellette scored the game winning goal as Canada beat the United States 5-4 in the gold medal game of the Women's World Hockey Championship in Burlington, Vermont.

Team Canada is in the process of transition and trying to get back into top form in time for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi after being clearly outplayed by the United States in exhibition games throughout the month of December.
