OSU Bass Fishers Club prepares for spring tournament

Collegiate bass fishing is gaining popularity, and The Ohio State University's club is coming on strong.  Jason Founds, current club president, founded the group just two years ago this month.  Since then, OSU Bass Fishers Club has gone from around a dozen guys who shared a passion for angling to a team that's making a splash in collegiate fishing.

Tournaments are organized by FLW College Fishing

FLW College Fishing organizes tournaments for college fishing teams throughout the country.  The competition is fierce and the stakes are high.  First place finishers take home prizes as large as $100,000.  Matching cash prizes are awarded to the winning club and to its school's scholarship fund.  The winning team also walks away with a brand-new bass boat, vinyl-wrapped in the team's school colors.

OSU Bass Fishers plan for 2010 competition

OSU Bass Fishers Club placed 4th in an FLW competition in 2009, bringing $1500 home to the club, with a matching award for the university's General Scholarship Fund.  The team went on to place 3rd in the Central Regional Championship, winning another $5000, for a total of $6500 each for the club and the university. Club members are planning their strategy for 2010, hoping to enter more than one boat in this year's tournament.  Team members plan to spend their spring break practicing for the event, which will be held on North Carolina's Mountain Island Lake the last weekend in March.

Sponsors, donations welcomed by OSU Bass Fishers

Costs of boats, tackle, and travel expenses add up.  Many of the club's members are experienced anglers, but students with no experience or equipment also join up.  Donations of good, used, fishing tackle helps get rods and reels into the hands of students who want to learn the sport of bass fishing.  The National Guard is a primary sponsor of FLW College Fishing, but local clubs also welcome sponsors to help them stay as well-equipped and competitive as possible.  The OSU Bass Fishers are well on their way to being another powerhouse team from The Ohio State University.
