The Oregon State Police wants to talk to individuals who may have witnessed a pursuit and attempt to elude involving an Oregon State Police trooper and a motorcyclist. During the pursuit, the motorcyclist reached speeds of up to 120 miles per hour on Highway 30, including in an area where the highway narrows to two lanes.
Just before 6:30 a.m., an Oregon State Police senior trooper saw black nd silver 2003 Suzuki motorcycle displaying a Washington license plate traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour in the area of milepost 42. When the trooper activated the patrol car’s emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the motorcycle picked up speed on the two-lane highway and used the westbound lane and eastbound shoulder to pass unidentified witnesses. The pursuit to stop the motorcyclist ended when the trooper lost sight of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was located and its operator arrested after a log truck driver notified police that they had witnessed the motorcycle pull into a parking lot near St. Helens. The arrest came after 6:40 a.m., when the log truck driver notified police that the motorcyclist had pulled into the parking lot at the Dyno Nobel plant. Officers from the Rainier and St. Helens Police Departments and the Oregon State Police arrived at the company’s parking lot and found the motorcycle, then began investigating the identity of the owner.
Investigation revealed that the motorcycle belonged to Michel Tejada Echeverria, 19, of Longview, Wash. Echeverria worked at the plant, where police arrested him for felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person. He was lodged in the Columbia County Jail and also cited for exceeding the posted speed limit in excess of 100 mph, not having a motorcycle endorsement and driving uninsured.
The Oregon State Police would like to talk to other witnesses who observed Echeverria’s reckless operation of the motorcycle between the entrance to PGE’s Trojan Park entrance in Rainier and the Dyno Nobel plant in Deer Island.
Anyone who may have seen this incident is asked to call the OSP Northern Command Center’s dispatch at 800-452-7888.
