Osieck's contract was terminated almost immediately after the match sparking celebrations from frustrated fans in Australia as they awoke to the news of his dismissal on Saturday morning.
The writing had been on the wall for Osieck after poor performances in qualifying saw Australia just avoid the playoff, before an identical result against Brazil last month saw the axe start to swing over his head.
David Carney was given a start and almost immediately cost Australia as he gave away an eighth minute penalty that Frank Ribery converted to open the floodgates.
Mitch Langerak was given the start in goal but faced a torrid night as he got little support from the defense in front of him.
Ribery proved crucial for the next goal as was able to make a run in on the left and crossed in for Olivier Giroud who then chipped Langerak to make it two before making it three as he hit another effort past Langerak.
The French kept on attacking as Ribery again proved to be dangerous as he sent the ball in for Yohan Cabaye who hit a powerful shot from outside the area to give Les Blue a 4-0 lead at the break.
The pain continued for Australia in the second half with Mathieu Debuchy stunning the Socceroos with a beautiful volley hitting in to the top corner of the net.
Even Karim Benzema who had gone 20 hours without an international goal got in on the act as Ribery got a hat-trick of assists crossing in for Benzema who finished it at the near post.
With 50 minutes gone and the French up 6-0 the hosts knew they were heading for a big win and so could let their foot off the gas slightly but even still Australia did not trouble the French at all.
Benzema continued to actually look dangerous for the remainder of the match while Loic Remy showed his class only to be denied by Langerak who late on was a rare bright spark for Australia proving to be the only line of defense.
The result spelled the end for Holger Osieck with assistant Aurelio Vidmar set to take over ahead of the match against Canada that must be a certain win against a much lower quality side.
