The Oscars winners 2013 have been announced with the ceremony running into the midnight hour early Monday morning. Among those taking home trophies and statues from the Academy Awards were Quentin Tarentino, Ang Lee, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence.
According to an Oscar winners list from Radar Online on Feb. 24, Daniel Day-Lewis was expected to win Best Actor fir "Lincoln" and did so. He also made a humorous acceptance speech suggesting that he had been up for the role of Margaret Thatcher, but Meryl Streep got it. He also suggested Thatcher was among Spielberg's choices to play Lincoln. With the win, Day-Lewis becomes the only actor in the history of the awards to win three times in the Best Actor category. His previous wins came for "My Left Foot" and "There Will be Blood."
Winning the Best Supporting Actor Award was Christoph Waltz for "Django Unchained," while Anne Hathaway took home the Best Supporting Actress award for "Les Miserables." Quentin Tarentino picked up the award for Best Original Screenplay for "Django Unchained," while Chris Terrio and "Argo" took home the award in the Adapted Screenplay category.
Jennifer Lawrence won her first-ever Oscar award for Best Actress for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook." However she was so emotional over it, or was wearing a dress that was so tough to maneuever in, that she tripped on her way up to make her acceptance speech. She still gracefully made her way on stage to give thanks to all of her cast, crew and inspiration.
Also winning in what could have been the night's shocking win was director Ang Lee for Best Director, as he likely upset Steven Spielberg, director of "Lincoln." Lee thanked the "movie Gods" as well as Taiwan, among others for helping with the sole 3-D movie among Best Picture nominees this year. "Life of Pi" picked up numerous awards on the night which also included Best Original Score and Visual Effects.
As for that award, it went to the heavy favorite, "Argo," with Ben Affleck, George Clooney and other members of the cast and crew assembling on stage. The award was introduced by the team of Jack Nicholson on stage and First Lady Michelle Obama via live video up on the big screen. Affleck previously won an Academy Award 15 years ago, but now is part of the biggest prize of them all, having directed, produced and starred in a Best Picture winner.
The 2013 Oscars awards ceremony, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, was seen on ABC via local affiliate station WSET 13 in Roanoke.
