So what are the Oscar nominees for best picture?

Those would be "American Hustle," "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Gravity," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," "12 Years a Slave" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

"Those are some excellent movies," says San Francisco resident, Katie Adler. "I saw, and enjoyed, them all."

It's worth noting that "American Hustle" and "Gravity" both received the most nominations with a total of 10 each.

There was some surprise over Tom Hanks not being nominated for Best Actor, however.

'The most notable omission by the academy was Tom Hanks, whose lead performance in "Captain Phillips" was widely considered a shoo-in. It was a particularly surprising snub since Hanks is widely beloved by the academy, having been nominated five times previously, winning for "Forest Gump" and "Philadelphia."'

"Loved that movie, Captain Phillips," says Katie Adler. "I was on the edge of my seat."

Another surprise was Robert Redford being omitted. The news source says:

"Robert Redford, expected by many to be nominated for the shipwreck drama "All Is Lost," also missed out on a best actor nod. Redford has never won an acting Oscar."

San Francisco viewers will want to know that The Oscars will be held on March 2.

They will be hosted by talk-show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. Viewers will likely be comparing the Oscars to the Golden Globes which is becoming increasingly popular, says
