The nominees for the Writing, Adapted Screenplay and Writing, Original Screenplay categories of the 85th Annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning from Beverly Hills. The announcements were made by actor Emma Stone and the host of the future telecast, Seth MacFarlane, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The nominees are:

  • ARGO, Screenplay by Chris Terrio
  • BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, Screenplay by Lucy Alibar & Benh Zeitlin
  • LIFE OF PI, Screenplay by David Magee
  • LINCOLN, Screenplay by Tony Kushner
  • SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, Screenplay by David O. Russell

ARGO is based on a published account called "Canadian Caper" by former CIA operative, Tony Mendez. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD was adapted from Ms. Alibar's one-act play of the same name. Based on the novel with same name, LIFE OF PI has been adapted from Yann Martel's fantasy adventure. LINCOLN was based in part on Doris Kearn Goodwin's book, TEAM OF RIVALS: THE POLITICAL GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is adapted from a novel of the same name by Matthew Quick.

Nominees were also announced for Original Screenplay. The nominees for 2013 are:

  • AMOUR, Written by Michael Haneke
  • DJANGO UNCHAINED, Written by Quentin Tarantino
  • FLIGHT, Written by John Gatins
  • MOONRISE KINGDOM, Written by Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola
  • ZERO DARK THIRTY, Written by Mark Boal

According to the Academy, the winners of the 85th Annual Academy Awards will be announced during a live telecast on ABC on February 24, 2013. The broadcast begins at 7 p.m. ET.
