Oscar Winning Films: The Big Country and Platoon in April's Reel 13

The Reel 13 (WNET THIRTEEN) April schedule opens on April 5 with The Big Country, William Wyler's tale of two feuding ranching families in the American West, for which Burl Ives won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Oliver Stone's Academy Award-winner Platoon, which details a young soldier's tour of duty in Vietnam, closes the month's classics on April 26. Platoon, the first in a trilogy of Vietnam War movies by Stone (followed by 1989's Born on the Fourth of July and 1993's Heaven & Earth), is also on the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Movies" list.

Also featured in April are two highly suspenseful films, Dressed to Kill and The Bad Seed. In the former, Brian de Palma's thriller, after a housewife is murdered, a young prostitute, the victim's son and psychiatrist find themselves entangled in the murder investigation. In the latter, based on the play by Maxwell Anderson, a housewife begins to suspect that her young daughter is a killer.

April's independent features include Anthony Hopkins and Diane Ladd headlining The World's Fastest Indian,and Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham, Kat Dennings and Tony Hale top lining The Answer Man.
Every Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m., viewers can catch a Classic hosted by film historian Neal Gabler, followed by an Indie, hosted by Richard Peña. The evening concludes with a Short selected by visitors to Reel13.org who vote for their favorite of three shorts every week.

Odd fatal accidents lead a woman (Nancy Kelly) to realize that her eight-year-old daughter (Patty McCormack) was born to kill. Also with Henry Jones and Eileen Heckart.

"I Am Love" (2009) Dir Luca Guadagnino
Family politics lead to tragedy in turn-of-the-millennium Milan. With Tilda Swinton, Flavio Parenti and Edoardo Gabbriellini.
