Oscar-winning director Miyazaki's 'Ponyo' swims along in theaters

After taking in $3.6 million and finishing ninth at the box office over its opening weekend, "Ponyo," the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki (2002's Best Animated Feature "Spirited Away"), continued its record run for the director.

Despite sinking out of the top ten, "Ponyo" took in another $2.4 million last weekend, putting its total gross at $8.1 million, outperforming Miyazaki's 2005 film, "Howl's Moving Castle" ($4.7 million).  "Spirited Away" took several months to reach the same amount during its run, and in the next couple weeks "Ponyo" is poised to bypass the $10 million mark - where "Spirited Away" finished.

"Ponyo" is also in 927 theaters nationwide - more than any other Miyazaki film. "Spirited Away" was showing in 711 theaters around its Oscar win, and "Howl's Moving Castle" peaked at 450 theaters.

"Ponyo" is playing in 5 area theaters this week:
