Whether you liked this year's host, Seth Macfarlane (of Family Guy and Ted fame) or not, this year's Academy Awards brought some surprises that may have put a kink in your office pool ballot. Some of the biggest surprises of the night included Ang Lee winning Best Director (for Life of Pi) over Steven Spielberg and Lincoln, and Argo taking home the Best Picture award.
See the list below for who won and who should have won at the 2013 Oscars.
- Best Picture: Argo
Argof*ckyourselves, Academy! - is basically what Ben Affleck wanted to say, but couldn't. He was famously snubbed for a Best Director nomination, and I had a feeling that because of that, Argo would beat out Lincoln for Best Picture - and it did.
What should have won: any of these movies. I saw them all except for Amour, and although I definitely had favorites, they were all fine films that deserved their nominations.
- Best Director: Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Ang Lee surprised many of us by grabbing the Best Director award for Life of Pi, when Steven Spielberg was the favorite.
Who should have won: any of these directors. I will admit I did like Life of Pi a lot better than Lincoln - it held my attention throughout its runtime - but Spielberg is a fine director as well.
- Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
No surprise here: Daniel Day-Lewis wins for Lincoln.
Who should have won: tough call here. He was fantastic in Lincoln but I would have liked to have seen Denzel win for Flight or even Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook.
- Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Another non-surprise: Jennifer Lawrence wins for Silver Linings Playbook ... and trips on the stage on her way up (oops), but is able to joke about it later.
Who should have won: I was rooting for either her or Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) so I'm happy with this choice.
- Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Who should have won: Anne is deserving of her award, but I would have liked to have seen Sally Field win for Lincoln, or even Jacki Weaver for Silver Linings Playbook.
- Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained
Who should have won: Waltz! His was one of the first major awards announced last night and I was so happy he won. The other actors nominated here are all deserving as well, but Waltz took the upset over Robert de Niro (Silver Linings Playbook) or Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln).
- Best Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained
This was a bit of a surprise! I was thinking either Amour or Zero Dark Thirty would win this category.
Who should have won: Django Unchained. Fantastic movie that I actually saw twice in the theater, which is unusual for me.
- Best Adapted Screenplay: Chris Terrio, Argo
What should have won: Argo. I was surprised it won over Lincoln but also thought it was deserving of its award.
- Best Original Song: "Skyfall," by Adele
What should have won: "Skyfall." Fantastic Bond song that fit in perfectly with the movie's opening sequence.
- Best Foreign Language Film: Amour.
What should have won: I would need to see the majority of these before deciding that.
- Best Animated Short: Paperman.
What should have won: I haven't seen the others in this category, but Paperman was so cute and very deserving of its win. I saw it for the first time last summer before a screening of The Odd Life of Timothy Green, when I was in the NYC for the BlogHer conference, and it captivated all of us.
- Best Animated Feature: Brave
What should have won: I actually thought Brave was a little underwhelming, and not Pixar's best effort; however, since it has the Pixar name attached, it's now won both the Golden Globe and Oscar. I would have liked to have seen Wreck-It Ralph or Frankweenie take home the Oscar in this category.
