Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman dead after apparent overdose

Acclaimed Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead early Sunday afternoon in his Manhattan apartment after an apparent overdose according to law enforcement officials and the Daily Mail.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was called out to his home in the West Village to determine the exact cause of death. Leaked reports claim police found him in the bathroom with a needle still in his arm. The actor has struggled with drug addiction in the past and had a stint in rehab in 2013 after being sober for almost a quarter of a century.

The shocking news comes less than 24 hours after the actor's representatives had to issue a statement denying that he was dead after an Internet hoax claimed he had died on Saturday.

Hoffman, 46, won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the 2005 film "Capote".

According to IMDB, the actor was currently in production to reprise his character Mockingjay in the hit "The Hunger Games" franchise. Producers have not released word at this early time on their plans for dealing with the death of the actor.
