To coincide with the hoopla and hype after the Oscar nomination announcement, it's time to explore the movies in a different way.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is rolling out a gallery of sorts to help with the overall experience of movies.
"Celebrate the Movies," a digital exhibition spotlights iconic moments from 84 films. They will showcase Hollywood and the business that made it famous.
In Los Angeles on digital billboards, and on the jumbo screen in New York's Times Square, one can take a look at the exhibition.
But, it will also be showcased on an online gallery on Oscar.com, and youtube.com/Oscars. There, fans can share their movie memories as well on their interactive sections.
Over the next two weeks, groups of 20 movie images will be displayed. It will span eight decades. A few examples go like this. This galleries will begin with "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935) and end with the "Avatar" (2009). In between, each decade will be represented with favorite films and highlights. They include, "Gone with the Wind" (1939), "Casablanca" (1942), "The Killers" (1946), "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), "True Grit" (1969), "The Exorcist" (1973), "Saturday Night Fever" (1977), "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980), "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989), "Apollo 13" (1995), "Shrek" (2001), "Ray" (2004), and "The Dark Knight" (2008).
The remaining dates in the Oscar timeline include: Final ballots mailed, Wednesday, Feb. 1; Nominees Luncheon, Monday, Feb.6; Scientific and Technical Awards presentation, Saturday, Feb. 11; Final polls close 5 p.m. PT, Tuesday, Feb. 21; 84th Academy Awards presentation, Sunday, Feb. 26.
