Oscar Pistorius settles assault case ahead of his murder trial

Olympic gold medal winner Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius, the double amputee charged with the shooting murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home on Feb. 13, 2013, has reached a settlement in an entirely different case – an assault case dating back to 2009.

MSN reported on Feb. 12 that Pistorius' lawyers have reached an agreement with Cassidy Taylor-Memmory, who had accused Pistorius of assault. Taylor-Memmory claimed to have been injured at a house party in 2009 when Pistorius allegedly slammed a door and then punched it.

Taylor-Memmory said she was injured from that breaking door. Pistorius was arrested for assault following that incident.

Pistorius launched a counter claim against Taylor-Memmory, accusing her of making up the assault. He said he was arrested without reason.

The Washington Post reported that Pistorius agreed to the settlement “because his lawyers advised him he could not fight civil and criminal legal battles at the same time.”

Regarding those legal battles, Pistorius and his legal team are currently also in negotiations with the family of his deceased girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius hopes to settle out of court in that case before he goes to trial for Steenkamp’s murder.

Pistorius is scheduled to appear in a South African courtroom on March 3 when his murder trial in the Steenkamp case gets underway. In addition to being charged with Steenkamp’s premeditated murder, Pistorius is also facing firearm charges in that case.

He [Pistorius] denies murder and claims he shot Steenkamp by mistake after believing she was a dangerous nighttime intruder in his bathroom.
