Oscar Pistorius was charged with the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The Olympic star had previous legal problems back in 2009. He was arrested and charged with simple assault for slamming a door on a woman at his home. On Valentine’s Day, Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp and his home. Authorities have charged him with premeditated murder. Pistorius has denied any allegations of an intentional murder.
Oscar Pistorius gave his side of the story about the details that happened the night of his girlfriend’s death. In a report on CNN, he says it was the middle of the night and he thought an intruder was in the house. He is a double amputee and did not have his prosthetic legs on at the time. It was pitch dark, but he was too scared to turn on the lights. He grabbed his 9mm gun from underneath his bed, went towards the bathroom, and shot bullets into the door. At that time, he did not realize that he had shot his girlfriend, and not an intruder.
Pistorius claims that he called out to Reeva-whom he thought was in the bed beside him-he wanted to make sure nothing bad happened to her. He heard no response from Reeva so he knocked down the bathroom door. Pistorius had different accounts as to how he broke into the locked bathroom. At one point he stated that he kicked the door in, another statement, he says he used a cricket bat to break it down. After getting into the bathroom, he scooped up the lifeless Reeva Steenkamp and carried her downstairs for help. He states, “I tried to render the assistance to Reeva that I could, but she died in my arms. I am absolutely mortified by the events and the devastating loss of my beloved Reeva.”
In a report on USA Today, Pistorius said that he was “filled with horror and fear” when he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder and accidently shot and killed her. The 29 year old Steenkamp was a model and a law school graduate.
