Oscar Pistorius was indicted on Monday for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early morning hours of Valentine's Day. USA TODAY reported on August 19 that Pistorius will be facing murder charges as well as a charge for illegal possession of ammunition. Pistorius' trial is set for March 3 in Pretoria, South Africa.
South African murder trials differ from those in the United States, as Pistorius will not be entitled to jury of his peers. A single judge will preside over the Pistorius trial and will make a ruling as to guilt or innocence. If found guilty of the premeditated murder charges, Pistorius will face a minimum of life but can serve a minimum of 25 years in prison. There is no death penalty in South Africa.
Pistorius, just 26-years old, cried when facing a judge for the indictment hearing on Monday and briefly held hands with his siblings. If he is found guilty of the premeditated murder charges, he will be no less than 51-years old when released from prison. The prosecution for this case is confident that they possess more than enough evidence to convict him.
