Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis was honored at Essence Magazine’s 6th annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon on Thursday in Beverly Hills, California. The 9-year-old “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star who is up for an Academy Award for best actress on Sunday was recognized for her accomplishments along with media titan Oprah Winfrey, actresses Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard and Naomie Harris and super television producer Mara Brock-Akil. The child star took home the Breakthrough award at the event for her performance in “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, while Winfrey received the Power award and Union the Fierce and Fearless award. Woodard, Harris and Brock-Akil received the Vanguard, Lincoln Shining Star and Visionary awards respectively.
Wallis is the youngest nominee in her category at the 2013 Academy Awards where she faces Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva and Naomi Watts. The ceremony will be held on Sunday Feb. 24 on ABC at 7 p.m. ET.
She will next star in Steve McQueen’s “Twelve Years a Slave” with Chiwetel Ejiofor, her Essence co-honoree Woodard, Brad Pitt, Adepero Oduye and Michael K. Williams.
