Oscar nominations: 'American Hustle' and 'Gravity' lead tight race

The most anticipated award season of the year has released the official list of nominees for the 86th Academy Awards.

Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominees Thursday morning, with American Hustle and Gravity leading with 10 nominations each, and 12 Years a Slave with nine.

The Best Picture nominees include Gravity, American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Best Director includes David O. Russell (American Hustle), Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).

Best Actress contenders are Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) who has been the award season favorite, Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) who has garnered her 18th Academy Award nomination, Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), and Amy Adams (American Hustle).

Best Actor list includes Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years a Slave), and Mathew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) who has so far won a Golden Globe for his performance, along with DiCaprio.

Hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, the Oscars will air live Sunday, March 2, on ABC.
