Tonight on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) 31 DAYS OF OSCAR;
Tonight and tomorrow night TCM is playing films set in Texas, all with an Oscar connection (See the full schedule below). Starting with one of the greatest westerns of all time “Red River” (1948) at 8 pm. The Howard Hawks western is about a tyrannical cattleman (John Wayne) and his surrogate son (Montgomery Clift who have a falling out during a cattle drive. Borden Chase received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay.
In “Written on the Wind” (1956) at 10:30 pm, Its adultery, impotence, jealousy and nymphomania in the Texas oil fields with Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone (best supporting actress).
At 12:30 it is “Pigskin Parade” (1936), Texas college football coach recruits a country bumpkin (Stuart Erwin, best actor nomination) with a wicked kick; and “San Antonio” (1945), at 2:30 am, with Errol Flynn as a onetime rustler who tracks down cattle thieves and tries to reform a dance-hall girl (Alexis Smith). The film received nominations for art direction and original song.
TCM host Robert Osborne is introducing the primetime entries in this year’s 31 DAYS OF OSCAR, which marks its 18th year on TCM. Throughout the month, TCM will feature movies set in 47 worldwide locations. The remaining dates are Texas (Feb. 9-10), Greece (Feb. 13), Italy (Feb. 14), Africa (Feb. 15-16), Russia (Feb. 16), Austria (Feb. 20), South America (Feb. 21), Southeast Asia (Feb. 23), New Mexico (Feb. 24), New England (Feb. 27), the Middle East (Feb. 28), China (Feb. 29), Japan (March 1) and Hawaii (March 1).
The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented live on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
