“The 86th Academy Awards brought celebrities from the Las Vegas strip shows and many others involved in the film industry.

This columnist interviewed magician Lance Burton on the red carpet.

Known as one of the world’s longest running magicians, Lance Burton became involved in helping young people throughout his career.

Q: You became interested in magic at the age of 5.
With more than 30 years as a magician, have you ever appeared in a film?

A: I appeared in “Make Believe”, a documentary about young people who perform magic. Filmmakers followed six young magicians for a year with a final competition in Las Vegas for the title as the “World’s Best Teen Magician.

Krystyn Lambert, one of the young women competing in the film, appears in Criss Angel’s new show “Magic Jam” (Luxor) in Las Vegas. Most magicians are male but this female made her mark.

I try to encourage the next generation’s interest in magic.

Recently I produced, directed and appeared in a film “Billy TOPIT, Master Magician.” This is a family movie with a lot of magic. We are in post-production now.

Q: You retired from show business?

A: I like to keep involved.

Q: Movies are the subject today, among the nine nominations for Academy Awards which is your choice?

A: I saw many of the films, as a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild, they send screeners. I can watch in the comfort of my home.
One of my favorites, the David O’ Russell film “American Hustle,” wonderful performances from everyone.

“Gravity” knocked my socks off. What a great movie and great performance from Sandra Bullock!

Q: Each film was different. Jennifer Lawrence, won an Oscar as Best Actress (Silver Lining Playbook, 2013) but missed one for supporting role in American Hustle.

A: Jennifer is super talented and only 23 years old. She is from my home town, Louisville, Kentucky. We never met but I am a big fan.
