The 86th annual Academy Awards once again has concluded with all the red carpet previews, interviews and Oscars handed out to those who won. Some predictions of winners came true along with surprises at the Dolby Theatre Hollywood Los Angeles where the awards and stars were showcased.
Host Ellen DeGeneres, comedian and host of her own daytime ABC talk show “Ellen,” gave her audience laughs through her pert remarks on the seated stars and what to expect while keeping the flow going. Being a master of ceremonies at an event like the Oscars can be quite a task; for the person selected must be engaging without being boring, and creative enough to keep an audience attentive. Ellen succeeded in doing just that; by dressing as a fairy witch in dedication to the 75th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz and having a delivery man come onstage to hand out pizza to the audience.
But Ellen’s selfie picture with other stars did the trick, which broke the Twitter record of three million people (which Ellen announced on her daytime show yesterday). Twitter crashed; as tweeters gobbled the picture containing actors and actresses Jennifer Lewis, part of the face of Jared Leto, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper (who took the picture), Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey and others. More on this can be read below.
The heavily marketed predictable winners were Cate Blanchett, for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Blue Jasmine,” Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor in "Dallas Buyer’s Club,” and “12 Years a Slave” for Best Picture. However the Best Picture category by critics also stated the films “Gravity” and “American Hustle” also had a good chance to win. Gravity won the most Oscars (7) which was not a surprise due to the advanced technology used in the film.
Surprises were zero awards for American Hustle which was up for 10 nominations. The film “Her” received two. Best Actress in a Supporting Role went to Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave. The actress played an outstanding, convincing character of a slave. Nyong’o also won the Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG) this year as well. Upon accepting the Oscar in tears she stated in her speech, “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s.”
John Ridley also won for the same movie, accepting the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay (Writing). Jared Leto winning Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club may have been a surprise to many since Bradley Cooper was the favorite in American Hustle.
The Oscar-nominated song “Alone Yet Not Alone” was disqualified from the Academy. Hollywoodreporter.com reported the story as to why in their article here at http://j.mp/1ijJ7ZB#sthash.HUvRePhF.
Other highlights at the ceremony were Angelina Jolie and Sidney Poitier walking out together to present an award, veteran back-up singer Darlene Love singing her thanks in a film she was featured in (20 Feet From Stardom) which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, Judy Garland’s children in the audience (Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joseph Luft), and the number of mothers who attended with their star-famous sons and daughters.
Though some of the winners speeches were long and the decor onstage was a bit gaudy, the program was the most watched Oscars show in years,
Yesterday on Ellen’s daytime program, she had a post-Oscar show for her enthusiastic audience.
Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o and the pizza delivery man were guests. Blanchett let her Oscar be passed around the audience. Ellen gave the pizza guy a $1,000 tip.
