Millions of people tuned in to see the 85th annual Academy Awards and watch Seth MacFarlane host for the first time on Sunday, February 24. But while most were watching from home, many were celebrating and watching the live telecast together at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, VA.
Dressed up in Oscar attire, movie lovers mingled, ate, drank, and bid on movie memorabilia and ticketed events in a silent auction. The atmosphere was lively and fun as guests answered trivia questions between commercial breaks and enthusiastically showed their support for the nominees during the telecast. The elegant Paramount Theater felt akin to being at the actual Oscars. There were even two local newscasters hosting the event and keeping the audience engaged during breaks.
Several people walked away with tickets to the Virginia Film Festival opening gala and signed posters for "Lincoln," "Breaking Bad," and "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps." Other prizes included a CD and "Beauty and the Beast" collector's edition set signed by Paige O'Hara, the voice of Belle herself.
Hosted by the Virginia Film Festival and sponsored by Wells Fargo, the benefits of the evening go to the university's Community Outreach and Education Program.
