Five-time Oscar nominee “The Descendants” (2011) is now playing on Huntsville theater screens, giving local film fans a long-awaited chance to see George Clooney’s latest acclaimed performance. As of Friday, January 27, 2012, the movie is currently playing at the Regal Hollywood 18 on S. Memorial Parkway and the Rave Valley Bend 18 in Jones Valley. Clooney has earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role, and the movie has also picked up nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
In a year of Hollywood nostalgia for classic films, “The Descendants” stands out as a more modern story, but its locations in Honolulu and Kaua’i have long been favorites of the film industry. (See “Classic movies shot on Kaua’i” for a slideshow of classic movie locations on the island.) Local defense industry professionals who often work on the islands will especially appreciate the familiar scenery.
In addition to Clooney, “The Descendants” features direction by Alexander Payne and performances from Beau Bridges, Shailene Woodley, and Amara Miller. The film is adapted from the best-selling novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, who also has a small role in the film.
