Osama bin Laden is dead

Osama bin Laden, head of Al Qaeda and Public Enemy Number One, is dead. The terrorist leader was killed by U.S. special opps forces in a firefight in Pakistan, where the terrorist has been in hiding in a compound. Other members of his organization are said to have died with him in the attack, though the identities of those killed have not yet been revealed.

The development caps a manhunt for the architect of the 9/11 attacks that has lasted more than a decade. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 3,000 U.S. citizens and dramatically reshaped U.S. foreign policy.

In a televised statement tonight, President Obama revealed that he was briefed last August on Bin Laden's likely whereabouts. A deliberate course of action was pursued over the months that followed, culminating in the successful raid on Bin Laden's headquarters.

The president in his remarks also revealed that Bin Laden's body is in U.S. custody.

More details will be reported as they become available.
