Double Speak and Newspeak; are terms coined by George Orwell (Eric Blair) in his book “1984”. Double Speak can be defined as:
“is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversion of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language.”
Newspeak can is defined as :
“citing dying metaphors, pretentious diction or rhetoric, and meaningless words, which encourage unclear thought and reasoning.” (Orwell’s Politics and The English Language)
In his recent address on NSA spying Obama was quoted as
“America’s capabilities are unique,” Mr. Obama said. “And the power of new technologies means that there are fewer and fewer technical constraints on what we can do. That places a special obligation on us to ask tough questions about what we should do.”
He presented the idea of giving the onus of data storage to private industry but still claimed that data collection is necessary only in cases where “National Security” is at stake. This brings forth the question of what exactly constitutes a “National Security Emergency”. In an administration that claims discharged combat vets, Christians, Constitutionalists and those who fear economic collapse are potential domestic terrorists, this is disturbing. That means that anyone who visits Libertarian, Constitutionalist or Christian Websites are subjects of data collection. The fact that the President has already addressed this and that the DHS report is accessible online makes this even more disturbing. It is now a broad acceptance of liberty violation.
Again Obama uses Orwellian language:
“When you cut through the noise,” the president said, “what’s really at stake is how we remain true to who we are in a world that is remaking itself at dizzying speed.”
Mr. President who are we? You are the same President that wanted to Fundamentally Change America. The question is do we remain true to the US Constitution and personal liberty in America as the founders intended; or do we remain true to your “Fundamental Transformation” and your Brave New World?
