Orvis offers free fishing clinics for fifth year

See also

The Orvis Company will once again offer free fishing clinics this year. Now in its fifth year, the fly fishing series of clinics includes levels 101, 201, and now a 301 level of instruction. To say it has been popular is an understatement: over 30,000 people have been introduced into the sport through these clinics since 2010 when the program started.

  • The Fly Fishing 101 program is the most basic level and perfect for the beginner. Its success is no doubt the result of its approach which focuses on correctly introducing the two most intimidating aspects of the sport: casting, and rigging. The 101 course consists of an hour of casting lessons and an hour of rigging lessons, including knot-tying.
  • The Fly Fishing 201 program is the next step in the program. It takes 101 grads and gets them on the water with an instructor in a lower student to instructor ratio and with a goal to catch fish. Locations are typically local waters where success probability is high.
  • Fly Fishing 301 is new to the Orvis fishing clinic suite. This program requires that the angler have attended the 101 or 201 level program, or have casting experience, which only makes sense since the class is on the water with a lot of one-on-one instruction and a lot more fishing time. A minimal charge may apply for this course.

Upon completion of Orvis fly fishing clinics, participants receive more than a great fly fishing education. They receive confidence in a sport that can be somewhat intimidating along with practical experience, AND, a certificate towards a free Trout Unlimited membership (worth $35), plus in-store offers valid for Orvis products.

In the Southern Tier of NY, and outlying areas, there a number of fly shops / events that offer the Orvis fly fishing clinics, as follows:
