ORU's Bell-Holter named Southland player of the week

Oral Roberts University center Damen Bell-Holter has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Bell-Holter averaged a double-double in leading the Golden Eagles to a pair of road wins last week. The senior from Hydaburg, Alaska (Ketchikan H.S.), had a career-best 35 points in an 86-72 victory over Southeastern and had 14 rebounds, including six offensive boards, while scoring 26 with seven rebounds and four blocks in a 76-63 win at Nicholls State. Bell-Holter moved into sixth place on the ORU career blocks list with 108 for his career.

For the week, Bell-Holter led ORU in scoring, baskets, field goal percentage, free throws made, rebounding and blocks as ORU went 2-0 in its first two conference games as a new Southland member. He made 23 of 33 shots and 15 of 19 free throws with 21 rebounds and four blocks in the two wins.

Honorable mention this week goes to Stephen F. Austin senior forward Taylor Smith, Central Arkansas senior guard Robert Crawford, Northwestern State junior forward DeQuan Hicks, Southeastern Louisiana senior guard Brandon Fortenberry and Sam Houston State senior guard Darius Gatson.

Sports information directors from each Southland Conference school nominate and vote for the player of the week, but are not allowed to vote for players from their own school. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
