WKMG news reporter Jessica Sanchez has a lot of experience hounding people for interviews. But when a staggering drunk "video-bombed" her live shot in the French Quarter of New Orleans, she proved that covering Super Bowls is not her thing.
In the video, Sanchez was doing a live shot from New Orleans for Orlando CBS affiliate WKMG's morning show when a woman, clearly partied out from the night before, interrupted Sanchez's shot. Sanchez then fired back at the drunk by doing a fake interview about STD's on Bourbon Street, saying to the woman:
So how long have you had an STD?
The drunk fired back, apparently more coherent then Sanchez thought, by saying:
I don't have an STD!
Sanchez then said:
So why did you wanna talk?
My question to Sanchez is why did she want to do a live shot in the French Quarter during the Super Bowl? TV reporters are well aware and should know that doing live shots, especially during big events like the Super Bowl, carry the potential to be "video-bombed". The video has become a YouTube sensation and there is not any doubt that the video is hilarious. But the real question is was it professional? And my answer is no.
For those who are not familiar with Sanchez, she has been a reporter for WKMG for nine years, first starting out as a field reporter before taking over the traffic anchor position in 2010. So it is not like she is an amateur at field reporting. She has plenty of experience hounding people for interviews and doing live shots.
So what is the problem here?
First, it sounded like she did not even want to be there. She started off with how the people on Bourbon Street hangout and looked glazed in the early morning hours. Well what did you expect Jessica? Family members with kids at the Magic Kingdom? This is BOURBON STREET, one of the most well-known party zones in the country. This is not squeaky clean Orlando, where the nightlife shuts down at 2:00 in the morning. Bourbon Street is a 24-hour party zone and you are bound to see drunks staggering around at 5:30 in the morning. That's one of the joys of Bourbon Street.
And second, why would WKMG send a traffic reporter to cover the Super Bowl? Sports reporters are better equipped at covering large sporting events. Are you telling me that the news stations in New Orleans don't know about their city's own traffic? Why do the people in Orlando need to know about New Orleans traffic? She should be in Orlando reporting on Orlando traffic, not in the middle of the French Quarter slamming drunks just for the fun of it.
So yes, the video is hilarious. Drunks are annoying and her smack down could easily be one of the funniest YouTube videos of the year. But she also should have understood the atmosphere she was in, and it is painfully clear that she is not up to covering Super Bowls in New Orleans. If drunks get on her nerves, then she needs to stick to covering parades at the Magic Kingdom.
New Orleans is not your type of town Jessica.
