With Naples and Tampa Bay suddenly sidelined by last minute forfeits from opposing teams this past weekend, only two Division II Florida Rugby Union (FRU) matches took place across the state of Florida on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9. The Orlando Griffins played the Miami Tridents, while the Boca Raton Buccaneers took on the Daytona Beach Coconuts.
Results from Division II action across Florida
The Orlando Griffins hosted the Miami Tridents at Thunder Field, located in close proximity to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. Orlando defeated Miami 38 to 14. The results of the match improved the Griffins’ record to 6-2-1, while the Tridents fell to 4-5.
Orlando travels to Fort Lauderdale this coming Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, while Miami hosts the 7-1-1 Tampa Bay Krewe.
The Boca Raton Buccaneers hosted the Daytona Beach Coconuts Saturday afternoon at Don Estridge Middle School in Boca Raton, Fla. Boca Raton defeated Daytona Beach 25 to 12. As a result of this match, Boca Raton improves to 7-2-0, while Daytona Beach drops to 3-6-0.
For this coming Saturday, Daytona Beach will host the 8-1-0 Naples Hammerheads, while Boca Raton should reap the benefits of a bye weekend.
Other rugby matches from across the state
In Saturday’s Division III action across Florida, the 4-1 Brevard Old Red Eyes defeated the 0-4 Indian River Raptors by a score of 57 to 0. The 4-0 Palm Beach Panthers beat the 2-3 Sarasota Saracens 31 to 17.
Four collegiate-level matches involving Florida clubs also took place this past Saturday afternoon. The University of Central Florida Knights defeated the Florida State University Seminoles 36 to 7. The University of Florida Gators suffered a 42 to 24 defeat at the hands of the University of Tennessee Volunteers.
The Florida Gulf Coast University pulled off an impressive 25 to 17 win over the University of Miami Hurricanes Saturday. Meanwhile, the University of North Florida Deadbirds defeated the Eckerd College Tritons Saturday afternoon 20 to 5.
Other collegiate results had yet to be made available to the Tampa Bay Rugby Examiner at the time of publication.
