"Orkey, The Squirrel"
In our backyard, there is a large brown and tan squirrel that I named "Orkey", who appears every morning for a breakfast of wild "birdseed". Climbing down from the nearby tree, Orkey hikes up the pole of our large (squirrel-proof) metal-caged bird feeder, and while swinging and hanging from the bottom, he finds a way to eat bits of scattered seeds from the feeder tray. He is really fun to watch and quite a character too,....curious, feisty, noisy, and also somewhat of a "comical" acrobat...( With plenty of other squirrel friends who sometime come and join him for a party at the bird feeder!)
One day however, the feeder was empty of all seed, so Orkey became upset and climbed back up the tree. Swishing his big fluffy tail, and chattering with a clicking sound that only squirrels could understand, Orkey made his frustration loudly known. With a bird's eye view of the feeder below, he kept looking down at it, as though perhaps magically, seeds would somehow re-appear...all kinds of delicious seeds, just like the ones in his dreams while sleeping high up in the tree at night, ....But now what would poor Orkey do? He was spoiled by the feeder.....! Well, at least the Fall season was coming soon, and there would be all sorts of wild seeds and nuts for him to collect....Climbing further up into the tree, Orkey finally made his way to gather whatever else he could find to eat that morning, and then rest and nap on a sunlit branch....
Its quiet now that the bird feeder needs to be refilled, but when the seed is again filled up to the brim, Orkey will surely return, I miss him when he's gone, almost like a long lost friend, but then he will come around again....climbing....hiking....swinging....hanging....sliding ....swishing..... and oh yes, chattering that familiar squirrel talk....Orkey has survived and always will..... Its so great to have my furry friend back!
