Organizing tip: Donate the old

Getting organized is a favorite New Year’s resolution. In the post-holiday rush to clear space for new toys and clothes, it’s tempting to chuck the old, unwanted stuff in a Hefty bag and heave it to the curb with all that used wrapping paper -- but it only takes a few extra minutes to sort good, usable items into Hefty bags for tax-deductible donations.

Good Will, Salvation Army and ABVI are a few of the non-profit groups accepting donations in our area. The Vietnam Veterans of America will supply a bag and come to your home to pick up discarded items ranging from clothing and household items to books, appliances and tools. (Call 1-800-459-VETS (8387) to schedule a free pick-up, or schedule online at www.vvapickup.org .)

You can feel good knowing that your cast-offs might help someone less fortunate -- and knowing the contribution might help reduce your tax bill, as well. Ask for receipts and keep them with your financial papers. Donating unwanted stuff can be an easy way to practice and teach your family the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
