NYCRUNS announced that they will be offering prize money to winners of the Brooklyn Marathon, which will take place in Prospect Park on November 17, 2013. In its third year, this will be the first time that monetary awards are available.
The top three male and female runners will receive $2,000 in total. First place finishers will receive $500 each; second place, $250 each; and third place runners will receive $125 each.
In 2012, Ben Leese took first place for men with a time of 2:37.10. Samantha Bower took first for women with a time of 3:04.44.
The Brooklyn Marathon course currently includes nine laps of Prospect Park. NYCRUNS has stated that they are hopeful it will follow in the footsteps of the ING New York City Marathon. This event, which is the world's largest marathon, was originally run completely in Central Park. After receiving support from local officials, it was moved to the streets and now runs through all five boroughs. NYCRUNS organizers hope that someday, the Brooklyn Marathon will run through the iconic streets of New York City's largest borough.
Registration for the Brooklyn Marathon is currently open. Organizers state that the race is about two-thirds full. It has a 500 person cap.
