How often do you wonder what you can do? Some times you don't even realize whats out there for you. In Orange County there are countless non-profits and organizations that need your help, and specifically if you are military or want to help a military child.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Clemente is currently looking for volunteers to mentor military children. The need for caring, committed mentors to support the children of those who defend our country remains urgent. Our focus is for the match to develop a one-on-one friendship and for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters to provide the children with positive role models and mentors.

Operation Bigs provides mentors to children of military families through our school-based program. Volunteers meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister for one hour one day a week (times and dates are the same every week) at the child's school. Contact the Camp Pendleton Operation Bigs Hotline: 858-746-9178 or CoryS@SDBigs.org

Maybe children aren't where your heart is, that's OK. There is also VITAS. They are looking to enlist your services to care for terminally ill veterans living at home and in nursing homes, assisted living communities and medical centers. VITAS Veteran Volunteers do not need to be U.S. Veterans; you need only the desire to remember; honor and support America's living heroes.

VITAS Veteran Volunteers visit terminally ill veterans; drive and/or accompany a veteran to appointments, shopping and other events; help a veteran apply for benefits or learn about available assistance; help replace lost or stolen military medals by contacting appropriate agencies; listen to life stories or record or videotape a veteran's reminiscences; telephone veterans to ask how they are doing; attend or help plan activities celebrating Memorial Day and Veteran's Day; educate veteran's groups about hospice services by speaking at their meeting.

Maybe you love to work with your hands, see the vision of your labor. You can come swing a hammer with Habitat OC and help build homes for families in Orange County! They are always in need of volunteers and would love to get you involved. Many of the volunteers are new to construction and learn a lot of new skills on our sites. Contact Laura@habitatoc.org (714) 424-6200 ext. 237.

There are always things you can do to keep yourself busy, whether your a spouse while your service member is deployed or your a service member that just wants to stay busy. For more volunteer options please visit VolunteerMatch.org.
