Today we examine a national organization that focuses on adult learning and continuing education - The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE).

This is the fifth in a series listing the various non-profit national training, educational, and speaking organizations that any training and development professional should be familiar with. Prior articles in the series showcased ASTD, ASCD, and NSA, and NASAGA.

AAACE is dedicated to the belief that lifelong learning contributes to human fulfillment and positive social change.

The AAACE mission is to provide leadership for the field of adult and continuing education by expanding opportunities for adult growth and development; unifying adult educators; fostering the development and dissemination of theory, research, information, and best practices; promoting identity and standards for the profession; and advocating relevant public policy and social change initiatives.

As a result of fulfilling their mission statement, AAACE hopes to do the following.

“We envision a more humane world made possible by the diverse practice of our members in helping adults acquire the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead productive and satisfying lives.”

The organization offers a publication, Adult Learning Quarterly. It is a practitioner-oriented journal tailored to all individuals who design, manage, teach, conduct, and evaluate programs of adult and continuing education. Adult Learning provides articles addressing practice issues with a problem-solving emphasis.

AAACE also offers members the chance to join a wide array of 26 interest groups that represent specific areas of interest and involvement to adult educators. Members can choose up to three groups to join. Among the groups available are staff development, adult psychology, literacy, human rights, religious education, vocational education, women’s issues, and aging issues.

The AAACE annual conference will be held October 24-29 at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater Beach, Florida. This four-day event will feature a wide array of speakers, concurrent sessions, a vendor expo, and various networking opportunities.
