The fashion industry is dominated by models standing at a runway height of 5’ 10”, even though; the average height of a woman in the United States is 5 feet 4 inches. The Fashion Umbrella Foundation is breaking this fashion industry mold by hosting a runway event devoted to the petite consumer utilizing models standing at a runway height of 5 feet 7 inches or shorter. UNDER will highlight designers and boutiques representing the Baltimore area.

Though over 70% of women in the United States are considered petite by the fashion industry, taller models have dominated runway shows, agencies, and event print ads. The petite market has been consistently showing signs of growth by changing the distribution style of brands like Liz Claiborne, Ralph Lauren, and Tag Harbor. These brands have seen significant profits from the petite fashion community to also stay in step with current styles.

“It’s time for the petite community to have a voice within the fashion industry, and UNDER is that voice and platform.” said Sharan Nixon, Executive Director of the Fashion Umbrella Foundation. “Petite consumers represent approximately $10B of buying power within the fashion industry, enough said.”

“Giving back is a big part of what drives me as well,” Nixon further says. “I love the idea of using fashion as a philanthropic stage for our organizational initiatives like the Fashion Umbrella Foundation Scholarship Award. Proceeds from ticket sales will be awarded to this initiative to provide a stipend to college-bound or registered students attending a college or university. The recipient(s) of the Fashion Umbrella Foundation Scholarship Award will be recognized on the finale night of Baltimore Fashion Week, Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore City.”

Although, the Fashion Umbrella Foundation Scholarship Award is mentioned, the Foundation has two other educationally focused initiatives like the Back-To-School: REFRESH, and the Educational Honors. The Fashion Umbrella Foundation is a member-based cultural art organization with an enhanced philanthropic concentration on education, work-life balance, and professionalism.

Tickets for UNDER are available online via the event website www.undertheevent.com or by contacting the Fashion Umbrella Foundation’s headquarters by email info@thefashionumbrella.org. UNDER will be hosted at Jazzy Studios, Owings Mills Mall, 10300 Mill Run Circle, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117. Jazzy Studios is located on the second level near the Macy’s entrance.
