Organic food ideas for Christmas gift-giving

Get all your Christmas shopping done on Black Friday? No? If you're open to organic food ideas, then follow me!

Health is one of our greatest gifts. You've probably heard that pearl of wisdom at least once. It's uppermost on dedicated organic foodies' minds as we shop at organic food stores, join CSAs, or make regular appearances at farmers' markets.

For your loved ones, why not give organic food gifts this year? Being given a gift of food brings a smile to nearly everyone's face. Imagine how much better a gift of organic food will be! It equals healthy food and ties in perfectly with the #1 resolution most of us write on our New Year's Resolutions lists.(That task hangs right around the corner, too.) As any fitness guru will tell you, healthy living begins the moment we ditch highly-processed foods that almost always contain GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, and/or MSG.

Let these guys take care of everything for you:

  • for the meat-lovers on your list: Organic grassfed beef and snack foods from Rocky Mountain Organic Meats. Their mouthwatering pictures will get you in the mood to order meats raised the way all meat should be raised---and they offer recipes on their website, too! Call their toll-free number, (877) 764-4606, or order online.
  • for the fruit-lovers: Succulent fresh-picked fruit. Order a basket from The Fruit Guys.

Or do-it-yourself---customize a basket for

  • breakfast food lovers: Fill a basket with organic bacon, or bacon from a sustainably-operated farm; a dozen eggs from a local organic farm, a package of Bob's Mills pancake mix, a bottle of GMO/HFCS-free maple syrup, a loaf of organic artisan bread, and a couple of fresh organic grapefruit. Add a bright bow for a festive look!
  • coffee lovers:  Fill a gift basket with a package or two of freshly-ground coffee. Or you might want to buy a package of coffee beans which you can grind on-site. Or, instead of you doing the grinding, include an inexpensive coffee grinder. A pair of cute coffee mugs add the perfect touch, and don't forget to add that bow!
  • tea lovers: green tea, oolong tea, rooibos tea, tulsi tea are among the healthiest teas we can drink. Fill a basket with three or four choices (favorite brands we use are Choice, Yogi, and Traditional Medicinals), add a mug, a package of Newman's Own cookies, and/or a jar of locally-produced honey. You know the drill---add the bow!
  • grapefruit lovers: Add a dozen or so fresh grapefruit, obscenely high in vitamin C and one of the healthiest of all fruits, to a basket, and a set of grapefruit spoons. Got one more colorful bow?

Next week, I'll share a couple more organic food ideas for loved ones on your list. They also make thoughtful, healthy gifts for your kids' teachers and Scout leaders!

Be sure to stick with organic foods. That "natural" label may have a pick-me look, but it means nothing. There are no standards in place to insure that you're getting clean, safe foods.

Happy shopping!
