Organic farming: Prepper paradise

The UN is pushing small organic farming to feed the world. That surely sounds desirable so long as governments find a way to permit farmers and citizens to obtain arable land on which to farm.

Why does the US government “push for the use of more chemically-intensive and corporate-dominated farming methods such as GMOs (genetically-modified organism) and monoculture-based crops” when the UN and environmental groups oppose this?

Reading an article from the Huffington Post “Big Ag” series, Michael Rosenblum asks, “Where did all of the small farms go?” We got better and cheaper tomatoes. The farm workers now work at Blockbuster. We watch more movies. That was his conclusion.

That sort of skips over the fact that genetically modified tomatoes have reduced the seed variety that was nature’s natural way to combat a fatal blight. Diversity among vegetables of the same variety is a good thing, and now we have lost it.

We have been puffed up and bloated by the Pillsbury Doughboy too. Too much gluten that turns to sugar is responsible, in part, for Americans becoming overweight and diabetic.

Government policy is heavily influenced by Big Ag. It also has a legacy of legislation and rules that may not make any sense. Here is an example from a report by Zach Weissmueller.

“"They want us to pay for our own raisins that we grew," says Marvin Horne, an organic raisin farmer and owner of Raisin Valley Farms. "We have to buy them back!"

This is but one absurdity that Marvin and his wife Laura have faced during their decade-long legal battle with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), whose regulations tend to favor large, corporate agricultural packers at the expense of small, family-owned farms.

Every year, the Hornes plant seeds, tie vines, harvest fruit, and place grapes in paper trays to create sun-dried raisins. And every year, the federal government prevents them from bringing their full harvest to market.
It's called an agriculture marketing order. Depression-era regulations meant to stabilize crop prices endanger the livelihoods of small farmers across the country, but the raisin marketing order is particularly egregious.”

Even as the United States government continues to push for the use of more chemically-intensive and corporate-dominated farming methods such as GMOs and monoculture-based crops, the United Nations is once against sounding the alarm about the urgent need to return to (and develop) a more sustainable, natural and organic system.

That was the key point of a new publication from the UN Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) titled“Trade and Environment Review 2013: Wake Up Before It’s Too Late,” which included contributions from more than 60 experts around the world.”
