Organic Agriculture now includes organic wines (Video)

A lot of people forget that Organic Agriculture includes Organic beverages. These beverages were among 12% of the total organic food sales in 2011. This information was provided by a survey which was conducted by the Organic Trade Association. Organic wines are becoming desirable among wine purchasers.

The definition of organic wine; is wine made without the use of prohibited substances or genetic engineering. The simple organic rule of agriculture is using natural substances and prohibiting the use of synthetic ones.

Wine can be sold as organic once it has undergone a certified USDA inspection. This inspection includes the growing of the grapes. After this point the transformation from grapes to wine must be certified. Organic certification includes insuring that grapes used for organic wines are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers which also includes soil. Yeast used during this process must be organically certified and no sulfur dioxide or sulfites can be added.

Consumers may find wines that are labeled as being made with organic grapes. This labeling means that the grapes used to create the wine were 100% certified organic. This has different requirements than the labeling of organic wines. Sulfates can be added to these types of wines.

It does not matter where organic wine is produced the certification requirements remain the same.
