Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller says he will not enforce any new gun laws that he considers to be unconstitutional. Mueller made his provocative threat in a letter sent to Vice President Joe Biden. The letter went viral after being posted on the agency’s Facebook page Tuesday.
In the letter, dated Monday, Jan. 14, the Oregon sheriff said his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional. Mueller claims politicians are "attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims" by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans. Mueller wrote:
"We are Americans. We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws."
The sheriff claims laws preventing citizens from owning certain semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines would violate their rights. However, critics point out that the sheriff swore an oath to uphold all the laws of the land, and by threatening to enforce only those laws that he approves of, the sheriff is in danger of abusing his position, and the public trust.
