Oregon man arrested for using hatchet to kill senior dog

On Thursday, a Tualatin, Ore., man was arrested for felony animal cruelty after using a hatchet to kill his 13-year-old dog.

According to Friday's KATU News, Leroy Jacob Moffitt admitted to the police that he killed his elderly dog.

According to Oregon Live, the dog, a Labrador retriever, was discarded in a dumpster at an apartment complex. Officials were able to track Moffitt down thanks to information in the dog's implanted microchip.

There is speculation that Moffitt killed his dog because of its age, however no one seems to know why he chose such a violent method to complete the deadly task.

A neighbor who saw the dog's body after Moffitt had used the hatchet, told KATU:

"When you euthanize an animal, you give them a shot and they just go to sleep, painlessly,"

"But when you kill an animal with a hatchet, there's got to be pain involved. You can't say there isn't."

After Moffitt's arrest, he was taken to the Washington County jail.
