Ordeal of Purphoros is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Aug. 19, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming product "Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters. Ordeal of Purphoros is one of six "Theros" preview cards that were revealed in an article by Trick Jarrett on DailyMTG.com.
Ordeal of Purphoros - 1R
Enchantment - Aura (Uncommon)
Whenever enchanted creature attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Then if it has three or more +1/+1 counters on it, sacrifice Ordeal of Purphoros.
When you sacrifice Ordeal of Purphoros, it deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
Ordeal of Purphoros can slowly grow one of your creatures over the course of several turns. Additionally, there's the potential for Ordeal of Purphoros to take out one of your opponent's small threats or simply hit them in the face.
Think of Ordeal of Purphoros as a very conditional Searing Spear. You won't get to surprise an opponent with it, unless you already control a creature with two +1/+1 counters on it. One idea might be to play Ordeal of Purphoros on Kalonian Hydra so that it becomes a 10/10 creature when you attack and be able to deal three damage right away.
It's important to note though that as an aura you could be setting yourself up for a two for one from an opponent's Ultimate Price or other removal spell. You'll want to watch your opponent's mana and cast it accordingly.
How will you use Ordeal of Purphoros?
