Orchard Prime Meats Wine & Shoppe in downtown Cary started out as a butcher shop, owned by Nick Domanico and partner Rich Montli. After numerous trips to Europe and South America, Nick's interest in wine grew and he began to sell bottles of wine in the butcher shop. What better way to showcase the choice cuts of meat and carefully chosen wines from around the world than to set up some tables and chairs and begin to tinker with the delicate preparation and pairing of these fine meats and pours.
A Tapas-style menu was born, with a few entrée dishes available that change weekly. On Wednesdays, eight wines are selected that are designed to pair with the specials offered that week. At $5 a glass, these pairings can be made without breaking the bank. Some specials include roasted turkey, sautéed potato crusted salmon, and $10 ribs.
Try the rich and creamy crab bisque with the Riva Ray 2006 Tempranillo or the steak filet with the 2007 Colombelle (a red blend of 60% Tannat, 20% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet). Be sure to save room for dessert; Nick's son Jon is the pastry chef.
If you find a wine you like and prefer a bottle to yourself, buy one off the large rack in between the butcher side of the shop and the cozy amount of seating. There's no corking fee, and many bottles are just $9.98.
Orchard Prime Meats Wine & Shoppe is open Wednesday through Sunday and on Thursday nights there is live music. Stop by and chat up the friendly owner about the wines on special and taste a few dishes, you'll wonder why you hadn't discovered this gem earlier.
