Michelle Hurst, known as "Miss Claudette" in the Netflix series "Orange is the New Black" was in a terrible car accident just before the holidays. Her injuries were so bad, she was placed in a medically induced coma in order to perform surgery near her spine reports TMZ on Jan. 16.

After the 16-day medically induced coma, Hurst is now awake. She is still in the intensive care unit at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in North Carolina and is listed in fair condition.

Many involved with the show have tweeted their support. They have even gone so far as to start a fundraising page to help pay Michelle Hurst's medical expenses and cover for lost wages. Natasha Lyonne tweeted, "Please give what you can to help Michelle Hurst - the amazing actress who plays Ms. Claudette on OITNB." Then she followed it up with a link to the fundraising site.

So far, fans and friends of Michelle Hurst have raised more than $8500. Very good considering the original goal was only $5000.

Details surrounding the car accident are unknown. The story only became available after Michelle Hurst awoke from the coma. Her representatives have given very limited information and Netflix has made no comment.
