Orange County Girl Scouts solve the mysteries at Cadette-O-Rama 2010

Got a Clue? Solve the Mystery at Cadette-O-Rama 2010. In Oak Canyon Park, over 600 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers got together the weekend of October 22nd -24th for some serious Cadette-O-Rama fun. Cadette-O-Rama is the Girl Scouts of Orange County's annual outdoor skill competition for Cadette Girl Scouts in grades 6 through 8. The girls get the chance to meet Girl Scouts from all over Southern California and enjoy skill and fun events. What is great about Cadette-O-Rama is that even though it's a competition, the event is designed so girls can have fun regardless of their troop's skill level. If the troop practices their skills like firebuilding, lashing, knife handling, first aid, compass, knots, tent set-up or emergency preparedness then they will probably do well in the skill events. If the girls choose to just come for the experience, then the fun events are for them. No practice necessary- just the desire to have fun. My troop did well on the skills events, but did awesome on the fun events. They were thrilled to come in 5th place in fun events, with so many girls to compete with.

Another fun part of Cadette-O-Rama is the yearly theme. This year's theme was Got a Clue? Solve the Mystery. All the fun events were based on this. Competitions like Gross Anatomy (sticking your hand in a box of guck and figuring out what it is), or the many relay races, puzzles games and even a shoot out with water pistols, had the girls cheering for themselves and each other. To go with the theme each troop decorates their campsite (and themselves) to go with the theme. Our troop went with Scooby Do, as did a few others. Some of the themes I remember were CSI, Where's Waldo, Blue's Clues, Clue, Scrabble and Clueless. Everyone's campsites were amazing. This was our first year and we were blown away at the creativity some of the troops put into their sites. My girls made new friends, learned new skills and had a fun time. They cooked their own food, put up their own tents and even lashed together their own washing station. If you had told me my girls would have done this great a year ago I may have been skeptical. We are very inspired for next year and the girls wish they knew what the theme was going to be so they could start planning now. It was truly a wonderful and memorable weekend for all.

A special thanks to all the dedicated volunteers from GSCOC that made this event happen. It was organized and a super fun weekend. (Even with the little bit of rainy weather!)
