Team Oracle, Team America! Watch the Americans go. The hometown boys challenging the Kiwi’s as the race boils down to one race. But wait; let’s look at the make-up of the team. Owner Larry Ellison is a true blue American. To the surprise of most fans, only one team member is a US citizen. The on-boat men are New Zealanders, Aussies, Dutch and British.
John Kostecki is the lone yankee on the squad. One man who is American. 51-year old Kostecki is a San Rafael, CA native, just 20 miles north of San Francisco Bay. He has much useful experience on the waters that host the 34th Americas Cup. It’s almost comical to see the fans along the Embcadero waving the stars and bars as the Oracle Team flys by. Chants of: “USA USA” seems bogus.
There is pressure building up to make the boats in the competition be manned by citizens of the entry. Television commentator, Gary Jobson, as said that since the charter of the America's Cup was written as a friendly competition between foreign countries with teams staffed by citizens of those countries. Maybe the USA just doesn’t have good sailors.
